No. 11 Yorktown only had four individual champions compared with five for fifth-ranked Castle, but the Tigers used better depth in springing the upset Dec. 29-30 at the 16-team annual Mooresville Holiday Classic.
Yorktown totaled 288.5 points – 45 better than runner-up Castle – in continuing a banner season for coach Trent McCormick, who was named the 2009 USA Wrestling’s Kids Person of the Year. Host Mooresville (156) finished third, while Jennings County (146) nosed out Homestead by a point for fourth.
Three of Yorktown’s four champs won by fall, which also helped the Tigers catapult to the team title. That, in addition to second-ranked heavyweight Ross Janney’s 5-3 decision over No. 11 Tyler Daugherty of Castle in one of the day’s three finals that featured ranked wrestlers.
At 125, third-ranked Derek Bevans pinned Castle’s Michael Brown. At 130, No. 10 Devon Jackson upset No. 9 Shawn Miracle of Bloomington North by fall. And at 135, No. 3 Andrew Heistand stuck Chris Oaks of Brownsburg. The Tigers also scored three runner-up finishes to just two for Castle.
Three Welches were winners for Castle as Luke decisioned Mooresville’s Jake Swigert 1-0 at 112, second-ranked Doug scored an 8-1 decision over Yorktown’s Cody Harper at 145, and No. 3 Chad pinned Plainfield’s Dustin Parrish at 152. Chad Welch was named the meet’s most outstanding wrestler after teching Jennings County’s Brock Wathen, pinning Yorktown’s Caleb Smith, and then sticking Parrish.
The Knights also had champions at 160 (No. 11 Cory Weikel, a 4-2 decision winner over Mooresville’s Andrew Gibson), and 189 (No. 6 Alex Rosebrock, an 11-5 decision winner over No. 7 Todd Hacker of Mooresville).
